Survival Skills for Women

FOCUS uses the Survival Skills for Women workshops to teach homeless women basic, day-to-day life skills. The educational content of the series focuses on self -contained units, which teach primary behaviors. First, self-esteem and a positive attitude are established. As the sessions progress the participants learn techniques for regaining control of their lives. Training methodologies are based on adult learning principles and assure success by using shaping, fading, modeling and reinforcement.

Survival Skills for Women is a series of 10 three- hour workshops. The program was developed by Linda P. Thurston, Ph.D. in the early 80’s as a way to assist women who were leaving the welfare system and is currently addressing the needs of women in 23 states. Participants learn and practice new behaviors. Each participant plans and discusses a way to used the new knowledge and skills outside the workshop, thus making real world applications.
